Facility Reorganization

Kraft Foods Technology Center

This project is part of a master plan developed by STR for Fortune 500 Kraft Foods. The project’s location at the Technology Center is Kraft’s primary research and development site in the United States.

In this phase, an existing 90-year-old 70,000-square-foot building and out buildings housing laboratories, office space, storage and pilot plant facilities was demolished and replaced with new facilities at the opposite side of the facility.

The purpose of the project was to reorganize inefficiently located functions on the existing campus to provide for continuity of operations and work efficiencies. As a result of the design, laboratory functions were united at the south of the campus. Pilot Plant operations were united to the north.

The project includes three major buildings/building additions: 1) Office-lab building (150,000 square feet); 2) Pilot plant (50,000 square feet) and 3) Storage building (5,000 square feet). Also included was the installation of a campus-wide chilled water loop distribution system.

The site was reorganized for improved traffic flow and security. Site work included a new signalized intersection, parking and drive modifications. The project also involved relocation of a 60-inch Village sewer and installation of a new 24-inch sewer under an existing building. Complicating planning was the existence of flood plain restrictions. The existing buildings were constructed within the flood plain prior to enactment of floor plain regulations, making connections to new structures difficult.
