The STR prototype elementary school is a means of providing school space quickly and economically. Faced with rapid growth in student enrollment, School Districts have opted to work with STR on elementary school prototype buildings to compress design time, establish school standards for materials and spaces, have accurate cost information and build upon “lessons learned.”
The prototype elementary schools are designed to accommodate 600 to 850 students, depending upon the specific configuration and scheduling of kindergarten classes. The size of the building has ranged from 50,000 to 83,000 square feet. Each of the prototypes includes a double height learning center, gymnasium, multi-purpose space, art room, music room and administrative offices.
The STR prototype has been adapted by many school districts. To meet specific school district requirements, the basic prototype is easily modified. Modifications have included a full-service kitchen, expanded multi-purpose room, large/community gymnasium, air conditioning, and widening of corridors.
