From books to bytes: reimagining an aging library

  • Challenge: Central Elementary’s aging library no longer met the needs of group-oriented, project-based learning or provided the necessary balance of technology and traditional resources for students and teachers.

  • Solution: Renovate the library into a “learning commons,” inserted into the school’s traditional classroom wing so the space could be reconverted to classrooms in the future if needed.

  • Reading nests inspired by a librarian’s mural of a fantasy world with rivers, mountains, and forests. Hexagonal blue carpet tiles evoke a river, green canopies over the genius bars resemble trees, and rabbit-burrow-style reading caves tuck beneath green hills and blue sky

  • A media studio with green screen, tinkering studio, project studio, and design lab support hands-on, collaborative learning

  • A project studio accommodates both small and large groups working together
